SPH Electives
First Day
At 8:00 AM on your first day, report to the EMG lab in the Neurology Department, 2nd floor Providence Building for orientation (or refer to the instructions provided in your welcome email). Then, page the neurology resident on call (dial 0 from any hospital phone and ask for the neurology resident to be paged to your extension or Canadian cell phone number).
On other mornings, the team generally meets in the resident lounge on the 6th floor of the Burrard Building. This is in a secured area so you may need to contact the team first to be allowed in if you do not have your ID yet.
Neurology at SPH
Neurology at St. Paul's consists of a consultation service and not and admitting service. We tend to see quite interesting cases, especially related to HIV / opportunistic infections and their neurologic sequelae given the lower socioeconomic status of the patient population in this area.
Educational Rounds
There are a number of educational rounds that occur each week during non-summer months.
- Tuesday 8 - 9AM: Neuroradiology Rounds (Radiology Conference Room, 2nd floor in the back of the Radiology Department)
- Wednesday 8 - 10AM: Neuroscience Grand Rounds (Paetzold Auditorium, Jim Pattison 1st floor, at Vancouver General Hospital)
- Thursday 8AM - 12PM: Neurology Academic Half Day
- 8 - 9AM is a case presentation, which everyone tends to attend
- 9 - 12PM are didactic lectures.
- Check with your senior resident about coming to this, depending on how busy it is!
NOTE: Some of these rounds are cancelled during the summer, so check with the residents.
Computer Access
You should have received an email with a link to instructions for online training. Once you have completed this, you will get login info for Cerner (our EMR). It is really helpful to have this done by your first day, though you may have to attend an in-person training session.
To log into any hospital computer from the lock screen, use the username and password given to you for Cerner access.
In BC, we have a province-wide EMR (called CareConnect) that only residents/staff have access to. If you need to see documents (e.g. consult notes, investigations) from other hospitals, the residents can help you out with this.
Dictating
In Cerner, all documentation (consults, progress notes, allied health documentation, etc.) is now available online. You may either type up notes or use the voice-to-text option. All consults should be written/dictated within 48h, and progress notes should be completed on the day of.
